mARGARITA novikova • junk Instruments •

Margarita Novikova, is a mixed media artist, noisemaker and journalist. Her work explores the collective and individual voice through oral history and documentary style installations. Novikova creates interactive audio-visual work using themes of migration and refuge. She became involved in film making while studying at MEPI, archiving research documentaries on empathetic societies through making underrepresented voices heard. In 2018 she completed a Masters in Sound Art at UAL. Through her community engagement projects, Novikova has developed upcycling rubbish into junk instruments as a tool for storytelling and a radical act for climate change.

CLOSING view

We have commissioned three new works by local artists that have sound or sound theory at their core, and explore the intersection of feminism and climate, amplifying voices often underrepresented in climate discourse.

Works sounding or non-sounding, address Bradford’s industrial history, particularly in the textile and manufacturing sectors which have contributed to significant environmental degradation and social inequality, disproportionately affecting working-class communities. Women in Bradford have long been at the forefront of environmental activism and sustainable practices, addressing issues shaped by social inequality.

Selected artists receive a fee of £500 & three hours of mentoring delivered by one of YSWN’s freelance Associates, and will present their work in the form of a viewing, listening, or performance on the final day.
