WORKSHOP

3pm-5pm

DR Rebekah okpoti

bells & whistles scratch orchestra

Dr. Rebekah Okpoti, UK, is an organist, academic and sound diarist. She began playing the Violin aged 2, then piano age 7 using the Suzuki method. In 2016, she was booked to play the piano at a funeral and arrived to find an organ instead, shaping her musical path. Okpoti has a background in music sampling and synths, repurposing sound recordings from unique sources like nature or homemade foley. For Okpoti playing the organ is a live version of this creative process, relaying registration and acoustics that position the ear between instrument and space. Her work is informed by the resonance of cathedrals and often draws from visual ephemera as scores, as well as maquettes to compose spatial works.

Carrianne Vivianette

Join us in TiM Cafe for chillaxing as we lightly transition from day to evening with sound poetry & avant-garde spoken word. Host Carrianne Vivianette will be reciting works by Hugo Ball, Lily Greenham and one of her own pieces, plus performing work by Elsa von. Freytag Loringhoven.

There will be an introduction to sound poetry, some recitals and performances of seminal works in the field. Carrianne will then lead a brief workshop for people to make their very own sound poem, followed by an opportunity to perform cabaret style in TiM Cafe.

Carrieanne Vivianette produces solo performance work that is socially engaging art. It is experimental, using structures of physical and vocal expression with sequences of text and choreography that are vignettes of spoken word, performative poetry, comical drama and improvised action. She has a particular interest in avant-garde, theatre forms and how artists express their personal philosophies, as seen in her current performance project, ‘Manifestations of Female Innovation’. She has been creating and delivering performance work independently and collaboratively since 2007, with a MA in Theatre Studies (2014) and PGCE in Secondary Drama (2016) she has experience of multiple roles within theatre and delivers performing arts sessions to others.

DRAWING SOUNDS

Ann Rosén, Sweden, is a composer, musician, and artist who started her career in visual arts in the 1980’s before shifting focus to music and sound art in the 1990’s. Rosén is a founding member of Syntjuntan, a trio that uses self-made synths to perform electroacoustic music. Her art often explores interpersonal communication and barriers between individuals. The series Pencil Barriers, involves creating sound works using the conductive properties of pencils. The Pencil Barrier/Graphite Barrier instrument was developed during a 2017 residency in Finland. The instrument allows sounds to be drawn, composed, and performed, creating evolving compositions.
